The Men of Ikaria
OK, fine and good. We say that people following our recommendations are having better sex- maybe even better than when they were younger. But how long can such a good thing last? Apparently it can last for a very, very, long time.
The people of Ikaria, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, follow virtually all of our recommendations- lots of vegetables, tomatoes, fruit, fish, olive oil, spices rich in anti-oxidants such as oregano, and they eat relatively little meat and dairy. They drink herbal teas and wine. They drink goat’s milk, and eat goat cheese, which would give them the calcium they need. They grow 150 types of green vegetables, which they steam or bake, (cooking increases the anti-oxidant content and steaming and baking limits the production of advanced glycation end products, or AGE’s). They don’t eat a lot of simple carbs, and virtually all of their food is fresh and unprocessed. Because walking is just an accepted part of life in this hilly island, they are not overweight.
Research has shown that 10-fold as many Ikarians live into their 90’s compared with the rest of Europe, they have half the amount of heart disease, 20% less cancer, and virtually no dementia. They don’t just live longer. They are healthy and very active in their old age.
And here’s the kicker- according to one survey, 70% of men in their 90’s, with an average age of 95 are still sexually active. So this isn’t some vegetable pie in the sky. Real people are proving that you can enjoy sex to a ripe old age.
